Sewing 101

There are so many things I wish I'd learned from my Grandma Betty Lou before she passed away when I was sixteen.  That doesn't mean however, I can't continue to be inspired by her talents and resourcefulness now as a mother, wife, and one who strives to live a sustainable life.  Grandma Betty Lou was the kind of person who could take a cucumber from her garden and turn it into five different things from a fresh salad to her special jared goodness.  And that woman could sew!  Although she tried to teach my sister, cousins, and me how to sew different things, it wasn't until recently that I realized what an important skill she was attempting to pass on to me.  So now I sit here, sewing different projects and learning as I go.

Mittens for my niece and nephew  I made out of old sweaters that I felted. The buttons are from a random bag of buttons I found at the bottom of Grandma Betty Lou's sewing box my mom gave me.
My mother-in-law loves horses, understandably since she has two of them, so I made her this sweatshirt for her birthday.  First I drew the silhouette on a piece of cardboard, which I later had the kids color as her card, then I cut the fabric out and applied it to a super soft sweatshirt from American Apparel.  Although some of the detail got lost in translation, I was still happy with how it turned out.  Plus I love the stria fabric.
This next little project is probably the most real sewing I have ever done.  I made this sweet little dress for my niece's birthday.  I bought the pattern and fabric from Oh So Sassy.  It was so much easier than I expected and now that I know what I'm doing I can't wait to make more!
Here is a little sneak peak of my next post.  I took this denim placemat from IKEA and applied pockets and other details from shirts my husband was going to donate.  I think it turned out pretty cute.
I love this detail.  This is from the inside neck of the collar.  Our old drycleaner stamped the shirts for reference.
That's my Sewing 101 preview.  If you would like to know how I did any of the projects or you have ideas you think I would be able to make at my level of ability, please feel free to leave a comment.
